Healthy Homes, Stronger Governance: Awaab’s Law, Board Assurance & Tenant Safety in Social Housing

Safe, healthy homes are no longer just an operational responsibility; they are governance, health, financial, and reputational issues that boards and senior leaders must understand.

As regulatory expectations evolve with Awaab’s Law, the Regulator of Social Housing’s Safety and Quality Standard, increasing scrutiny from the Housing Ombudsman, and a greater focus on tenant outcomes, Boards and senior leaders must be confident that they provide effective oversight, ask the right questions, and receive meaningful assurance.

This session is designed for Housing Association and ALMO Board Members, Executives, Governance Leaders, and Directors of Housing in local authorities. It will show how to move beyond compliance and integrate healthy homes into strategic decision-making. Participants will gain insights, an assurance framework and practical tools to strengthen governance, manage risk and improve resident outcomes, preparing their organisations for future challenges.

Jenny Danson will draw on the Healthy Homes Hub’s work, including Warm Rents and Asthma Friendly Homes, to demonstrate how housing providers can move from reactive problem-solving to using data, resident experience, and health outcomes to inform strategic decisions.

Why attend?

This session goes beyond compliance, offering insight into how effective governance enables your organisation to anticipate risk, improve decision-making and deliver healthier, safer homes. Whether you set strategy, provide assurance, or support your Board, you will gain practical knowledge to strengthen governance and prepare for the future.

What you will learn

You will leave better equipped to:
  • Ask better assurance questions: understand what Boards and senior leaders should ask about housing conditions, resident health, safety and organisational risk.
  • Know what your data is really telling you: identify the metrics Boards should review and recognise gaps that could expose your organisation.
  • Strengthen strategic decision-making: by exploring how stock condition, energy performance, affordability, and resident health can inform investment and asset management decisions.
  • Understand your governance responsibilities: recognise why healthy homes should be a strategic governance priority, not just an operational repairs issue.
  • Learn from practical innovation: see how Warm Rents and Asthma Friendly Homes connect housing, health and data to improve resident outcomes.
  • Take something practical back to your organisation: leave with Board assurance questions and a healthy homes dashboard framework to strengthen scrutiny and reporting.
