What We Do
Boards and Board Members
Board and Governance Reviews
Whether you are reviewing your board's effectiveness, want to do a mini review of your governance structure or a full governance review, the BDA can bring you that vital independent view.
We will ensure your governance is efficient, effective and delivers good value for money so you can deliver your vision and mission in the best way possible.
Board and Governance Reviews
Our approach will provide you with a fully rounded assessment of your governance practice, its strengths, and our recommendations for improvement. Our recommendations are designed to be constructive, practical and forward-looking so that you can develop a plan for continuous improvement, build your succession plans, ensure boards are well supported in their work and assess how fit for purpose your governance framework and documents are. We enable you to demonstrate the degree to which you are meeting your corporate objective, maintaining good governance and the requirements and good practice expectations of the Regulators and your respective Code of Governance.
Board Performance and Effectiveness Review?
Good governance includes reviewing the boards performance collectively and individually. A Board review with the BDA provides you with:
· A fresh perspective and independent view
· Independent support of the Chair’s appraisal
· An independent person’s viewpoint, which Boards are more able to accept recommendations from
· More time for the Board to consider strategic issues as the BDA will prepare all the paperwork and reports
· Ensuring you meet your regulatory requirements of the Regulator for Social Housing, Scottish Housing Regulator and Welsh Government and your Code of Governance
· A route map to improve the Board's performance and effectiveness
· Confidence for the executive that the Board is fit for purpose
· More productive Board meetings and effective decision making going forward
· Improved personal relationships and appreciation of individual roles and skills
· Improved Board teamwork and a collaborative working relationship with the executive and with internal and external stakeholders
· The groundwork in place for better succession planning and board recruitment
Best practice recommends that Board reviews are carried out with the support of an independent body at a minimum every three years.
The Effective Chair
The BDA’s Effective Chair training will give your Chair (or aspiring Chair) the skills they need to Chair well, ensure good participation without over influencing, improving the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of your meetings.
We will also give your Chair the skills needed to managing disputes within your Board or Committee.
Health & Safety (H&S) Training
This training will give your Board the information they need to understand its Health and Safety responsibilities, how to get assurance from the Executive and how to lead from the top on this vital subject.
In October 2020 the Regulator published the Housing sector risk profile and unsurprisingly Health and Safety was right at the top. With the Regulator stating that Boards are ultimately responsible for ensuring the Health and Safety of their tenants and staff, and that they must have appropriate controls in place to ensure compliance with all their Health and Safety responsibilities. The Board Development Agency has designed a one-hour session that will cover everything you need to know about your Health and Safety responsibilities as a Board Member.
Our interactive session will cover:
What a Board Member needs to know about Health and Safety?
We will look at the top Health and Safety Risks in the Housing Sector including Fire, Asbestos, Legionella, Electrical, Gas, Lifts, Lone Working, Working at Height, and Stress Management and your statutory and regulatory obligations relating to these Health and Safety Risks.
What are the Boards responsibilities?
We will look at what your responsibilities are as Board Members, how you can demonstrate effective commitment to Health and Safety and lead from the top. We will look at practical ways in which you can demonstrate your commitment and we will also explore what an effective Health and Safety strategy looks like.
How do you gain assurance on Health and Safety?
We will explore how you gain assurance that the top Health and Safety risks are being effectively managed. We will look at the three lines of defence, and the Board and the Executive team's role in receiving assurance. We will look at practical ways in which you challenge Health and Safety concerns, and we will look at how you can develop and monitor effective Health and Safety performance metrics.
Delivering the RIGHT Health and Safety Culture
Finally, we will look at how you can help drive the right Health and Safety culture within your organisation. We will explore what a good Health and Safety culture looks like and what a poor Health and Safety culture looks like and give you some tools and techniques to help improve the Health and Safety culture within your organisation.
Equality and Diversity and Inclusion
Recently the way we think about Equality and Diversity has changed with Black Lives Matters, discussions around unconscious bias, Equity, not Equality and much more. It is no longer good enough to just tick boxes. We need to ensure there are meaningful conversations going on behind the scenes.
This training will of course ensure your Board understand the legislation they need to be aware off, but it will also offer them the opportunity to increase self-awareness and cover the practical strategies needed for a board and the organisation. This training will ensure your Board members take new awareness into your Board role and the rest of your life.
Resolve Board and Executive management disputes with mediation and avoid other more divisive forms of action such as disciplinary procedure.
With BDA you get impartial and independent mediators who will:
• Open and improve dialogue between disputants
• Review options and outcomes with them
• Help reach an agreement (with concrete outcomes)
• Provide coaching and mentoring for those involved in the dispute
Succession Planning For Boards
Whether you combine succession planning with a BDA Board Effectiveness review, or you complete that part yourself, succession planning assistance from the BDA, gives you an opportunity to improve your Governance, fill skills gaps on your board and increase the overall effectiveness of the Board.
We can bring best practice and our experience to the table and give you back time for you to do other things.
