Whether you are new to the social housing sector or wish to learn more about the responsibilities you are required to meet, this course will give you the knowledge you need to be effective in your current role as a part of the governance team.
By the end of the course, you will better understand the best practices, successful approaches, and working principles for social housing providers in England, Scotland, and Wales. You will better understand your role within your organisation’s governance structure and the environment you work in, such as the Regulator, Companies House, and the Charity Commission.

The Fundamentals Of A Good Board Meeting
- The guidelines for successful meetings – usual conventions and where these are set out in your organisation.
- The role of the Chair.
- Preparation process needed to ensure a successful meeting.
- The role of the agenda and the agenda preparation process.
- Linking agendas to agreed business objectives and business plans.
- Reports for Information, Confidentiality, Voting
Developing Your Skills as Governance Officer
- Minutes – the importance of recording the meeting.
- Skills needed to develop good note taking minute taking.
- Minute writing conventions.
- Confidentiality and circulating minutes.
- Using electronic systems.
How You Will Learn
This training is run across four two-hour online sessions weekly via Zoom, the equivalent of 1 full day’s training.
We aim to run the course three times throughout the year. To support your learning, you get free access to the NHF Code of Governance 2020 (21 January 2021) and What the Code of Conduct (16 June 2022).
