Cyber Governance for Boards

Cyber security is the top strategic risk for many housing associations right now, so we know we should be paying attention. But what does effective governance look like in practice, when most board members aren’t and never will be, technical specialists? Using the Cyber Governance Code of Practice as a framework, this session will provide an introduction to the strategic art of cyber governance, helping you to take a structured approach and debunk the myth that boards have to be technical to be effective.

By the end of the session, you will have a better understanding of the board’s role in overseeing cybersecurity and cyber resilience. Gain familiarity with the Cyber Governance Code of Practice

What you will learn

The housing sector is investing in digital technologies to better serve tenants and increase operational efficiency. However, increased digitisation has also heightened organisations’ vulnerability to cyberattacks and business continuity failures. Cyber attacks are becoming more prevalent in every sector, including housing, and are much more damaging.

Public concern about cyber security is at an all-time high, prompting providers to ensure the safety of their services and the protection of their tenants. The UK government is also introducing stricter new cybersecurity and resilience regulations, which are likely to increase personal accountability for board directors.

Boards need to know how to manage cybersecurity risk at a strategic level, not just as an operational IT workstream, but board members typically come from non-technical backgrounds and may lack confidence and expertise.
