JUNIOR GOVERNANCE SUPPORT OFFICER TRAINING

Whether you are new to the social housing sector or wish to learn more about the responsibilities you are required to meet, this course will give you the knowledge you need to be effective in your current role as a part of the governance team.

By the end of the course, you will better understand best practice, successful approaches, and working principles for social housing providers in England, Scotland, and Wales. You will understand your role within your organisation’s governance structure and the environment you work in, such as the Regulators, Companies House, and the Charity Commission.

What You Will Learn

The Background Of Governance in Social Housing

  • Your role as a Governance Officer or Assistant
  • What your regulator does and needs from your organisation 
  • What type of Company your organisation is and what the implications of this are 
  • What other bodies you need to report to 
  • The role of the Board, Chief Executive, Committees and senior staff 
  • The role of governance in relation to the organisation’s business plan  

The Fundamentals Of A Good Board Meeting

  • The guidelines for successful meetings – usual conventions and where the rules of your meetings are set out 
  • The role of the Chair
  • Preparation process needed to ensure a successful meeting
  • The role of the agenda and the agenda preparation process
  • Linking agendas to agreed business objectives and business plans
  • Reports for Information, Confidentiality and Voting 

Developing Your Skills as Governance Officer

  • Minutes – the importance of recording the meeting 
  • Skills needed to develop good note taking and minute taking 
  • Minute writing conventions 
  • Confidentiality and circulating minutes 
  • Using electronic systems

How You Will Learn

This training is run across four, two-hour online sessions weekly via Zoom, the equivalent of 1 full day’s training.

We aim to run the course three times each year. To support your learning, you get free access to the NHF Code of Governance 2020 (21 January 2021) and What is in the Code of Conduct (16 June 2022) webinars (or equivalent webinars for Scotland and Wales).

Fees & Additional Information

The price of this training is £475 plus any applicable VAT; for an additional £200 plus VAT, you can add our Support Package, which is perfect for those who need ongoing support.
