Health and Safety: what a board member needs to know

The Sector Risk Profile highlights the importance of prioritising Health and Safety. The Board must understand its responsibilities and know how to ensure that the Executives are providing enough assurance in this regard. Setting an example at the top of the organisation for this is crucial.

The Regulator has stated that Boards are ultimately responsible for ensuring the Health and Safety of their tenants and staff and they must have appropriate controls in place to ensure compliance with all their Health and Safety responsibilities.

What you will Learn

What a Board Member needs to know about Health and Safety: We will cover the overall risk profile of the sector and concentrate on a few major Health and Safety concerns, such as fire, asbestos, legionella, electrical, gas, lifts, lone working, work at heights, issues about health and well-being, and your legal and regulatory responsibilities regarding these risks.

What are the Board’s responsibilities: We will discuss your duties as Board members, practical ways that you can show your commitment to Health and Safety, and how you can effectively demonstrate that commitment. We will also explore the key elements of an effective Health and Safety strategy.

How do you gain assurance on Health and Safety: We will explore how you can gain assurance that the key Health and Safety risks are being effectively managed. We will examine the three lines of defence, the roles that the Executive team and Board play in providing assurance, as well as realistic approaches to raising Health and Safety issues and creating and tracking efficient performance metrics for these areas.

Delivering a Health and Safety Culture: Finally, we will look at how you can help drive the right Health and Safety culture within your organisation. We will explore what a good Health and Safety culture looks like and what a poor Health and Safety culture looks like, and give you some tools and techniques to help achieve the right culture within your organisation.
