With increasing regulatory scrutiny, Boards must ensure fair decision-making, tenant engagement, inclusion, and strong governance. As housing organisations act as landlords, employers, and service providers, equality laws apply across all functions. Recent changes, including the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023, highlight the importance of staying informed and compliant.
By the end of the session, you will gain a clear, practical understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and its direct relevance to governance, decision-making and regulatory compliance.
What you will learn
You will learn how to apply equality principles to governance and understand the Equality Act 2010, the Public Sector Equality Duty, and the concept of “due regard.” You will also identify the nine protected characteristics and recognise different forms of discrimination, including indirect discrimination.
- Addressing key governance challenges: while many Boards are confident in finance and strategy, they are often less familiar with equality law. This session translates legal concepts into practical governance advice, demonstrating how to apply equality law and ensure compliance in housing policies.
- Regulatory context: the UK housing sector faces heightened expectations, including stronger consumer standards, increased focus on complaints and service accessibility, and greater scrutiny of organisational culture and fairness.
- Practical value for Boards and Executives: you will gain confidence in interpreting equality law at Board level, the ability to identify and mitigate equality-related risks, skills to assess equality impacts in decision-making, and a stronger foundation for compliant and ethical governance.
