GOVERNANCE OFFICERS LEADERSHIP TRAINING

This thorough eight-module training led by our directors, Alice Pearce and Yvonne Atkinson, covers everything a governance officer needs to know; by the end of this training, you will have a solid understanding of the guiding principles and operating principles and procedures of Governance in a social housing organisation and voluntary organisations.

This course would be beneficial to those who have some knowledge and are familiar with how their organisation currently operates, or for those who are entering a higher/managerial role. For those who are entirely new to Governance, we have our Junior Governance Officer Training.

Unit 1 – Introduction To Social Housing Organisations

Unit 2 - Introduction To Social Housing Organisations : Legal Structures

  1. Types of social housing such as; companies  limited by guarantee or shares under Companies Act 2006, Community Interest Companies, Trusts & CIOs.  
  2. The role of Constitutions 
  3. Local Authorities and ALMOS  
  4. Charities Law and compliance 
  5. The operation of group structures within organisations 

Unit 3 - Governance Roles

  1. Role of the Company Secretary & Governance Officer  
  2. Filing of  Annual returns  to the  social housing regulator(s) and legal regulators  
  3. Role of governing bodies 
  4. Role of Directors  
  5. Personal liability and responsibility and insurance  
  6. Role of the Chair 
  7. Role of Executive Team  
  8. Role of shareholders,  Members of the company and subsidiaries – role and rights 

Unit 4 - Social Housing Regulation

  1. Social Housing Regulation in England Scotl and Wales  
  2. Tenants involvement in monitoring performance  and good governance  

Unit 5 - Developing Good Governance Frameworks

  1. Codes of Governance  
  2. Developing a good governance framework for users, tenants and other stake holder involvement and participation 
  3. Codes of Conduct and conflicts of interest 
  4. Payments to Board members 

Unit 6 - Effective Decision Making And Good Governance

  1. Managing risk 
  2. Decision making framework and schemes of delegation 
  3. Board reports and paperwork role in governance 
  4. Evidential decision making : triangulation  and avoiding group think  
  5. Effective Meetings 
  6. E-governance   
  7. Data Protection 

Unit 7 - Developing Good Governance Boards And Governing Bodies

  1. Board recruitment and succession planning  
  2. Embedding Equality, Diversity and Inclusion 
  3. Board member Induction 
  4. Appraisal or personal reviews 
  5. Personal development plans 
  6. Coaching and mentoring 
  7. Communication and team work 
  8. Disciplinary action against directors and termination of Board membership 

Unit 8 - End of Program Tutorial discussion and quizzes.

How You Will Learn

This training is run across eight, 3.5 hour online sessions weekly via zoom. We aim to run the course two to three times each year. The training will run on a weekly basis except for half term & Easter holidays breaks.

Fees & Additional Information

The price of this training is £2,200 plus VAT.  10% discount for Go! members.  Each session will be recorded and available on our website, where you will have access to watch it again.

  • Tuesdays 21 May 2024, then weekly until 16 July 2024 (break in school holidays 28.5.24). 10:00am – 1:00pm  (11 June will be 1.00 – 3.00pm).
